The National Police have arrested a 51-year-old man in Alicante for an alleged crime of usurpation of public functions, after being intercepted while simulating a police action with a blue rotating light.

The events occurred when Citizen Security agents observed a vehicle with a blue rotating light that was pulling over another car. Initially, the officers thought it might be a police vehicle, so they stopped next to it.
However, the driver of the vehicle accelerated and left the scene while removing and turning off the rotating light. The agents followed the car and caught up with it a few meters ahead. Upon stopping next to him, they confirmed that the driver was visibly nervous.
Once identified, the agents asked him if he was an agent of authority. The man admitted that he was not and, when asked why he was carrying a police rotating light and had stopped another vehicle, he stated that «he just wanted to have a laugh because the driver had run a red light».

After this explanation, the officers searched the vehicle. In the trunk, they located two jackets with police emblems, in addition to the blue rotating light that he had allegedly used to simulate a police intervention.
The agents confirmed that the man had used these items to falsely claim to be an agent of authority and perform acts typical of the police. Therefore, they proceeded to arrest him as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of usurpation of public functions.
The crime of usurpation of public functions occurs when a person, without being an authority or official, performs acts typical of an official position and assumes a role that does not correspond to them. This conduct can generate risky situations for citizens and directly affect public trust.
