Burns and excessive alcohol consumption are the primary reasons for emergency room visits during Alicante's San Juan Hogueras festival, prompting Vithas hospitals to enhance their services.

During the week of the San Juan Hogueras in Alicante, a significant population increase is expected, along with a rise in recurring annual risk factors. Vithas Alicante and Vithas Medimar hospitals have implemented a special reinforcement of their emergency services to cope with the anticipated surge in incidents.
Dr. Mª Jesús Cano, medical director of Vithas Alicante and Vithas Medimar hospitals, explained that the influx of people during the festivities multiplies the healthcare pressure and causes demand peaks. "It is essential for the service to be prepared to meet patients' needs," she stated.
The most common reasons for consultation during this fire-themed celebration include burns, incised wounds and cuts, alcohol intoxications, and other trauma-related issues. According to Dr. Cano, in minors, burns are often caused by improper use of pyrotechnic material, while in adults, alcohol consumption is a frequent factor leading to emergency care.
For minor burns, it is recommended to wash the area with water and neutral soap and apply a specific burn cream to reduce the risk of complications. In more severe cases, one should go directly to the emergency room. Regarding wounds, the doctor advises assessing whether sutures are required, noting that the maximum time for suturing is 6 hours.
Throughout the Hogueras week, adult patients will be attended 24 hours a day at Vithas Alicante Hospital, while pediatric and maternal-infant emergencies should go to Vithas Medimar Hospital.
