The agreement, finalized after a meeting between the Urban Planning councilors of both municipalities, Antonio Peral and Francisco José Soler, will be incorporated into their urban planning. In Alicante, the proposal will be integrated into the Structural General Plan, which already designates an economic axis in this area and will now be complemented by land from the neighboring municipality.
This new corridor is envisioned as a supramunicipal area for locating unique and strategic economic activities. The initiative seeks to strengthen the connection between the two main urban centers in the south of the Valencian Community and create new opportunities for the entire metropolitan area.
Alicante's Urban Planning councilor, Antonio Peral, highlighted that «this agreement effectively places the Alicante-Elche development area, which we have been jointly working on for several years, on the ground, enabling a large space between both municipalities to foster supramunicipal strategic activities that will benefit both cities and the entire metropolitan area».
For his part, Elche's Urban Planning councilor, Francisco José Soler, emphasized that «Alicante and Elche once again demonstrate that collaboration between administrations is the best path to drive transformative projects». Soler added that «this economic axis alongside the A-79 opens a historic opportunity to attract innovative companies, generate wealth, and strengthen the leadership of our cities in the province and the Valencian Community».
The A-79 axis will play a structuring role in the productive system by directly connecting the economic areas of Alicante and Elche. According to the plans of both city councils, this connection will foster the creation of synergies, complementarity of activities, exchange of economic flows, business cooperation, and the generation of economies of scale.
The proposal will also leverage the opportunity offered by the Torrellano bypass, which will improve connectivity in the area at provincial, regional, and national levels. Planned uses include activities related to innovation, the green economy, and advanced technologies, as well as strategic productive, logistics, or tertiary uses. Other supramunicipal-scale activities that can reinforce the economic positioning of the Alicante-Elche area are also contemplated.
