The project modification will allow the Central Park to extend to Salamanca Avenue and Estrella Square.

The construction of Alicante's Central Tram Station, with preliminary work having begun in October 2024, has been redesigned to incorporate an underground car park and free up a large green area on the surface, anticipating the future Central Park.

The Alicante Central Tram Station project, which commenced preliminary work in October 2024, is set to become the first phase of the future intermodal hub and Central Park. These infrastructures will be located on land freed up by railway tracks following the arrival of the AVE high-speed train. The construction of this entirely underground station includes a significant modification to the original plan, which will allow for the expansion of the green area envisioned within the 468,925 square meters of the Integrated Operation number 2 (OI/2), approved in April 2023.
The main change involves the relocation of Adif's vehicle car park, which was dismantled during the first phase of the tram station's construction. Initially, Adif ceded the land to Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat (FGV) for the station's construction, which will be the fourth and largest of the existing ones (Marq, Mercado, and Luceros), featuring two central platforms and four tracks. The agreement initially stipulated the car park's return to the surface upon completion of the work, which was awarded to Rover for 102 million euros.
However, a new collaboration protocol between Adif and FGV, signed last July within the Avant society (involving the Government, the Generalitat, and the City Council), now dictates that the car park will be built underground, adjacent to the Central Station itself. FGV will undertake the construction of this four-story underground car park, capable of accommodating 500 vehicles, with the cost later covered by Adif. This decision frees up the surface space for exclusive pedestrian use.
This new configuration will enable the creation of a large esplanade, 75 meters long, between the Adif Terminus Station building and Alcalde Rafael Millá Santos Street. This area will be primarily dedicated to landscaped zones, extending the Central Park towards Salamanca Avenue and Estrella Square, thereby prolonging the green space to the most central point of the land parcel.
The modification aligns with the overall urban design, which opts for a terraced layout at different levels to overcome the more than 9-meter elevation difference between Bono Guarner Street and Aguilera Avenue. This terraced arrangement with landscaped areas aims to ensure pedestrian permeability and bridge the divide between the neighborhoods of San Blas, La Florida, and Ciudad de Asis. The detailed solution is expected to be presented next Monday at the Central Park project presentation event, organized by the Ministry of Transport and Alicante City Council.
Work on the tram station, measuring 300 meters in length, 40 meters in width, and 15 meters in depth, is progressing with preparations to connect it to the tunnel already constructed under Estación Avenue. FGV anticipates commencing these works in May and completing them within three to four months, as detailed during the site visit by the President of the Generalitat, Juan Francisco Pérez Llorca.
