The Alicante City Council has awarded Abala Infraestructuras the mixed contract for the project drafting and execution of adaptation works for the future International Museum of Temporary Exhibitions of Las Cigarreras for 1.189 million euros.

This contract, with an execution period of three months (one for project drafting and two for execution), includes significant improvements. The exhibition space will be located in the old Casa de la Misericordia, a building that was once a Tobacco Factory in the neighborhoods of San Antón, Carolinas, and El Pla.

"This award is a fundamental step for the museum to become a reality within the deadlines we already advanced, before the end of the year. We are very excited about this project because it is designed to be a cultural benchmark for Alicante in a privileged space."

The successful bidder's proposal incorporates several improvements over the initial tender. Among them, the extension of the works' warranty period by two additional years stands out, bringing the total period to two years and three months. Furthermore, a 1% increase in quality control plan actions is contemplated, especially regarding material reception control on site, execution supervision, and acceptance tests.
The International Museum is scheduled to open its doors in the second half of this year. This space, conceived to become a major cultural reference for the city, will host top-level exhibitions, such as the Casa de Alba collection, impressionist masters, or fashion figures like Balenciaga, as well as painters like Sorolla or Marc Chagall. It will also include a children's educational area.
The new cultural infrastructure will have 780 square meters of exhibition space, 1,600 square meters in total, and five rooms to host temporary exhibitions, which will be periodically renewed every six months. The historic building, the Casa de la Misericordia, adapted in 1801 as a Tobacco Factory, has been undergoing a complete rehabilitation process for several years with the help of European funds.
