The Railway Infrastructure Administrator (Adif) is undertaking a significant expansion at Alicante Término Station, aiming to equip the terminal with up to 10 standard gauge tracks and a larger lobby, enhancing capacity and services.

The works, which began last July, will allow for increased frequencies and expanded high-speed and long-distance services. This project, awarded to a UTE led by Rover Rail for 20.2 million euros (taxes included), involves adapting two conventional tracks to standard gauge and adding four more tracks with the same features.
The project is being developed on the surface, confirming that the final section of the track yard will remain open-air, without undergrounding. However, its integration has been planned to ensure pedestrian permeability between the ends of the railway box and to facilitate the extension of the Central Park green area to Salamanca Avenue.
A recent modification in the works of the Tramway Central Station will contribute to this goal, as the relocation of the Adif car park will now be underground, freeing up surface space for a large esplanade with green areas.
Currently, efforts are focused on remodeling the conventional gauge platforms, carried out in phases to maintain railway traffic. Work has already been completed on platform 1, including the renewal of its electrification, track adaptation, accessibility improvements, and the installation of a canopy for user protection.
In the coming months, work will begin on the standard gauge track bundle, starting with the adaptation of platform 3. Once the conventional gauge area remodeling is complete, the number of standard gauge tracks will progressively increase from the current 4 to the planned 10. This will position Alicante station as one of the terminals with the highest high-speed traffic capacity in the national network, on par with Valencia and Málaga stations, according to the Ministry of Transport.
The expansion also includes interventions in the lobby area. In the coming weeks, the remodeling of the conventional area restrooms will begin to create space for expanding passenger access control. Additionally, in the next quarter, work will start on expanding the main lobby by 990 square meters. The entire project is expected to be completed by late spring 2027, coinciding with the electoral period.
