The main objective is to reduce flood risk in the ravine's surroundings through the construction of a 1.6-kilometer collector and the creation of a river park with three interconnected lagoons. This action will transform a vulnerable area into a new green space for citizens.
The Generalitat will contribute 10 million euros, while the remaining 3 million will be financed by the Municipalities of Sant Joan d’Alacant and Mutxamel. The Commissioner for Recovery, Raúl Mérida, highlighted that the project is a decisive step to protect the population from intense rainfall episodes and anticipate climate effects.
The new collector, which will run parallel to the A-7 highway cover as it passes through Mutxamel, will have a retention capacity of 20,159 cubic meters. Its function will be to manage flow rates and prevent floods from affecting inhabited areas in both municipalities.
The three lagoons, which will cover a total area of 8,608 square meters, will allow for the settling and filtering of channeled rainwater, improving hydraulic performance and creating a river park. The mayor of Sant Joan d’Alacant, Santiago Román, welcomed the agreement as a response to a long-standing historical demand from residents, affecting areas like Salafranca and Cañaret.
The project will allow for the recovery of 60,000 square meters of green space, which will include paths, trails, and cycle routes. Furthermore, it will prevent the direct discharge of the ravine's initial waters, which can carry waste, into the local beaches, thereby improving water quality along the Alicante coast.
