A new citizen platform, the Independent Platform of Aigües (PIA), has been established in Aigües to oppose the expansion of the El Campello landfill, located 1.6 kilometers from the municipality.

The collective, made up of over sixty people, primarily demands that the Consell does not approve the plant's expansion, a project currently in the public exhibition phase. The platform's presentation took place this Wednesday at the Casa de Cultura, where its representatives displayed dozens of garbage bags with the names of the towns that deposit their waste at the facility.
The landfill has been operating for almost two decades, and its useful life is nearing its end. The company FCC, which manages the complex, requested a few months ago from the Ministry of Environment an increase in the surface area of the reject landfill. The new waste cell, which would extend to the north, east, and west of the current one, would occupy 5.8 hectares and a total cell area of 70,972 square meters, with a capacity for 1.72 million cubic meters of waste.

"Until now, the impact was relatively low; in the mornings, there was a slight smell, but we cannot allow an expansion that will bring more bad odors and suspended particles."

the affected residents' collective
The platform considers the issue one of solidarity, as none of the 52 municipalities in Marina Alta and Baixa want the landfill at their doorstep. The affected residents emphasize that Aigües is a small inland municipality with a natural environment they wish to preserve, as many people come here seeking tranquility and clean air.
The mayor of Aigües, Emilio Solbes, has expressed the full support of the City Council for this citizen initiative, assuring that the objective is the same and that they will work in parallel. The municipal plenary already approved a motion against the expansion in March, urging the Generalitat and the Consorci Mare to halt the expansion process and guarantee the protection of affected municipalities.
The motion also demands that all technical requests from the City Council be addressed and that Aigües be considered in any decision directly affecting its residents. The Consorci Mare, owner of the plant, manages waste from 52 municipalities in Marina Alta, Marina Baixa, and El Campello. The General Directorate of Quality and Environmental Education has subjected the initiative to public information, as it implies a substantial modification of the integrated environmental authorization and requires an environmental impact assessment.
