The lack of space at IES Cabo de la Huerta in Alicante has forced students to take Geography classes on the stairs, highlighting the educational center's overcrowding.

This high school, which accommodates 800 students despite a real capacity of 450, has had to resort to extreme measures. The overcrowding has also led to the cancellation of several Physical Education sessions this academic year, as the gymnasium cannot meet the demand of all students. Even the prefabricated classrooms are insufficient for the number of new students.
The situation reached a critical point this Thursday, when an extracurricular talk occupied one of the classrooms and, with no other available space, not even the library, second-year Baccalaureate students were forced to hold their class on the stairs. This circumstance has been denounced by the teaching assembly and the Platform for a Dignified Space, who insist on the need to build a new high school in the area.

"However, institutions continue to take no action."

the CCOO Education Federation
The CCOO Education Federation has called on the Ministry of Education for a shock plan for educational infrastructure, aiming to resolve deficiencies in many centers. A resolution presented to the Staff Board of the province of Alicante was unanimously approved, but the union laments the lack of action by institutions.
A year ago, the Alicante City Council and the Ministry of Education announced the renovation of five high schools in the city, including IES Cabo de la Huerta, after years of demands due to lack of space and deteriorating facilities. Last March, the mayor indicated that projects for IES San Blas and Las Lomas would be tendered before the end of the year, while those for Virgen del Remedio and Cabo de la Huerta would follow next year.
