The recovery works for this building, declared a local heritage asset, focus on the rehabilitation of interior coatings and the main facade. Interior and exterior carpentry will also be replaced, a false ceiling will be installed in the sacristy, and aesthetic painting and restoration work will be carried out. Additionally, the electrical installation, lighting, and equipment will be renovated.
This new phase of intervention, focused on aesthetic and conservation aspects, follows a structural consolidation action carried out at the end of 2024 with the council's own funds. During that intervention, walls were consolidated, cracks were repaired, and the roof was addressed, thus solving humidity and structural issues.
It is part of our identity and our history
The mayor of Serra, Alicia Tusón, has positively valued the government team's commitment to the recovery of monumental heritage, stating that "it is part of our identity, our history, and also the collective memory of the town." Tusón emphasized that "with this new phase, the rehabilitation of a hermitage much loved by all the residents of Serra will be definitively completed," and added that "we are awaiting the favorable report from the Directorate General of Heritage to begin the works."
The hermitage of Sant Josep and the Creu, a simple construction from 1894, crowns a hill next to the Arab tower from the 12th century, restored by the council. The hermitage is part of a unique calvary, also built in the 19th century, with paths and views over dry stone walls.
