Residents of the El Murtal urbanization, located in the municipality of Segart (Camp de Morvedre), have expressed their concern and are demanding the creation of a second evacuation route. The proximity of a recent fire in the Calderona mountain range, very close to the homes, has intensified fear among residents, who consider that the single access and exit route could become a trap in case of fire.
The demand for an alternative exit, located in the upper part of the urbanization, is not new; residents have been requesting it for over ten years. According to their explanations, the existing path leads up the mountain and does not offer a safe exit in case of fire, representing a potential danger. "It's the long-standing concern of the residents; we want an evacuation plan for the upper area to have a real exit," states one of the residents.
As a possible solution, residents propose adapting an existing trail that runs along the rear of the mountain and would lead to Gilet, in the Sant Esperit area. This proposal would require increasing the width and slope of a section of about 180 to 190 meters to allow vehicle circulation.
The Segart City Council acknowledges the problem and is considering the proposal, but points to funding as a significant obstacle. The mayor, Francisco Garriga, explains that possibilities are being studied, but that the execution would involve managing private land, either through permission or purchase, and would likely require financial aid from the Conselleria de Medio Ambiente (Regional Ministry of Environment).
As a preventive measure, the council urges residents to keep their plots clean and free of vegetation overhanging their homes. Meanwhile, the approximately forty families in the El Murtal urbanization face another summer with anxiety about the possibility of a fire.
