In an assembly of delegates held in Port de Sagunt, within the framework of the International Day for Safety and Health at Work, a union leader from Camp de Morvedre pointed out that the PowerCo gigafactory represents an opportunity for the reindustrialization of the region with dignified jobs. However, he insisted on the need to accompany this growth with quality public services, such as healthcare and education, in addition to facilitating access to housing.
“"Approximately 40% of family income is allocated to housing, and this prevents people from developing their life projects."
For May 1st, the union encourages people to "fill the streets" to demand "higher wages, shorter working hours, more rights, and public policies that prioritize people over economic interests." It was argued that it is possible to improve wages, as record corporate profits have been registered in recent years, demanding a fair distribution of wealth to reduce inequality and poverty.
Another speaker at the assembly, the Secretary of Occupational Health and Environment of CC OO national, highlighted the importance of the Occupational Risk Prevention Law on its thirtieth anniversary. He mentioned that, although workplace accidents have significantly decreased since 1976, with 736 deaths last year compared to 1,300, the regulations need to be updated. New problems focus on occupational diseases, especially in sectors such as services, digitalization, and technologies, where accidents are fewer but new unrecognized pathologies emerge. The union's slogan for the commemoration is "Work yes, get sick no".
Among the legal modifications proposed by CC OO, a greater consideration of gender issues in prevention, the exploration of psychosocial risks, and the impact of new technologies are included. The need to modernize regulations to address extreme weather phenomena was also emphasized, with a regulation indicating what to do, when, and how.
Before the May 1st demonstration in València, the union will maintain the tradition of honoring the victims of workplace accidents at the monument in the Alameda del Consell of Port de Sagunt at 9:30 AM.
