Last January, the government team initiated the termination of the works contract for the renovation of the planters in the Nieves Berenguer Garden. This project envisioned the renewal of 26 planters along 440 meters on Obispo Barrachina Street. The decision came after granting a one-month extension to the contractor, Cauce Construcciones, to complete a project that was supposed to be finished in November.
After breaking ties with the company, the City Council seized the 7,053 euro bond. Now, it is re-launching the contract to complete the remaining works. The new action is valued at 160,425.97 euros, a figure lower than the 170,000 euros for which the original contract was awarded to Cauce Construcciones. This reflects the limited progress of the work, of which the City Council determined only 17% had been executed.
The deadline for the works, still to be awarded, is three months. In the previous contract, the concrete planters corresponding to phase I and phase II were completed, but phase III of the initial contract, in addition to the completion of the planter, remains pending. The construction of a new planter with exposed concrete walls was planned, increasing the interior dimensions of the planter's basin, taking into account the existing elements in the square and the adjacent roadway.
Taking advantage of the administrative restart, the City Council has modified part of the initially proposed action. Initially, the replacement of the sub-base and artificial grass was planned, which generated neighborhood complaints due to problems with pet urine. Therefore, it has been decided to replace the artificial grass with a layer of draining concrete in different colors, which will form a network of pores to allow water to pass through and divert it internally to the tree pits.
