The Elche City Council has announced it is close to issuing the first closure orders for vehicle storage lots in the areas of Torrellano and El Altet, near the airport, due to non-compliance with regulations.

The local government, led by Mayor Pablo Ruz, is finalizing the closure of some of these facilities following inspections and the period for affected companies to respond. This action is part of the process to regulate the proliferation of storage lots linked to the Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport, an activity that has generated neighborhood complaints due to the transformation of agricultural land and lack of regulation.
According to Ruz, local police have inspected around 60 facilities, requesting documentation. After the response period, action will be taken against those that do not meet the requirements. The mayor highlighted that since the General Plan was modified to regulate this activity, no new storage lots have been established.
The municipal government distinguishes between necessary lots for car rental companies and those used as parking for airport users. "Storage lots are necessary, yes. Which ones are necessary? Car rental lots, not vehicle parking lots," stated Ruz, who admitted the situation has led to "absolute chaos" and that the Council's role is to impose order.
Residents of Torrellano have called for swift and firm action from the council. The controversy has intensified in recent months, with neighborhood complaints about the establishment of large storage lots on rural plots. Compromís spokesperson Esther Díez had previously accused the local government of allowing these activities to proliferate without sufficient controls.
With the first closure orders being prepared, the City Council aims to move from the diagnostic phase to concrete measures against non-compliant facilities. The key will be how the announced urban planning modification is finalized and the criteria it establishes to differentiate between permitted and unpermitted uses.
