On April 21, 2002, Elche CF achieved a memorable victory at Oviedo's home ground, with a 3-6 scoreline, an performance described as worthy of Real Madrid.

That spring afternoon, the 'franjiverde' team, led by Julián Rubio, clearly outplayed the Asturians, who were going through a difficult period both sportingly and institutionally. This thrashing, which included a small scare at the end, evoked the club's glory days in the sixties.

"This Elche team looked like Real Madrid."

In the final stretch of the 2001-2002 season, Rubio's Elche generated excitement with the possibility of promotion to Primera División. In just one month, they achieved impressive results such as a 4-0 against Xerez, a 5-1 against Atlético de Madrid, and this 3-6 away win. Although they did not achieve promotion, they remained undefeated in the last nine league games.
The star of that thrashing at Carlos Tartiere was Meca, who scored a hat-trick. This player, trained in Real Madrid's youth academy, opened the scoring early after a good individual play by Nino. Before halftime, Benja and Meca himself had already sealed the match with a 0-3 lead.
The 'franjiverde' exhibition reached its peak with goals from Serrano and Meca's third, putting the score at 0-5 in the 70th minute. After a brief period of relaxation that allowed Oviedo to close the gap to 3-5, Elche controlled the final stretch and Antonio Moreno sealed the set in the 88th minute.
Elche's celebration was disrupted by the invasion of the pitch by Oviedo fans, protesting their club's performance. This thrashing is one of Elche's few victories in Oviedo, having visited the 'carbayones' on 26 occasions, with only three wins: that of 2002, a 0-2 in 2019, and a 1-3 in 1965. The six away goals scored is the highest in the club's professional football history, matching two other occasions: a 4-6 against CD Málaga in the 1962-1963 season and a 1-6 against Levante in 1981-1982.
