Elche CF center-back, Pedro Bigas, stated that the key to the team's permanence is for more clubs to get involved in the relegation battle, thereby increasing the Illicitan club's chances.
Bigas, one of the most experienced players in the locker room, admitted that the victory against Valencia CF left a “strange” feeling because, despite winning, the team did not move out of the relegation zone. However, he highlighted the positive side of an increasingly open scenario, with many teams involved in the lower part of the standings.
“
"It had been a long time since such a crowded fight for permanence was seen. We must focus on ourselves, on doing our best; that way, results will eventually come."
The player from Palma, who will miss the match against Valencia CF due to an accumulation of yellow cards, avoided predicting a specific points tally for salvation but expressed confidence that the objective would be achieved, hoping it would be “before the last matchday.” He added that “everyone sees the writing on the wall” in an “unusual league” where teams at the bottom also accumulate points.
Bigas emphasized the significance of the remaining direct clashes against rivals such as Deportivo Alavés and Real Oviedo, warning that the head-to-head record could be “extremely important” in such a tight finish. Regarding the upcoming commitment against Atlético de Madrid, he recalled his opponent's demanding schedule, involved in both the Champions League and the Copa del Rey final, but insisted that the focus must be on Elche itself.
“
"They are a strong team, but the more tired they are, the better for us. We don't know if they will rotate, but that wear and tear has to show. If we do things well, we can get the three points. The team believes in what it does and knows it can compete against anyone. The Martínez Valero stadium pushes us, and we have already shown other times that we can beat them."
Born in Palma de Mallorca35 years ago, Bigas has played 145 official matches for the 'franjiverde' team in professional football. The club and the center-back agreed a month ago to extend his contract until June 2027.
