The preliminary document for the new Segura basin plan 2028-2032 includes the possibility of transferring 15 cubic hectometers annually from the water received in Vinalopó to Murcia. In response, the Central Board of Vinalopó Users will submit technical proposals by the end of May, considering that the authority to carry out a water transfer between hydrological demarcations rests with the State.
A spokesperson for the Central Board emphasized that without effective repair of the San Diego reservoir and guaranteed delivery of all available flows to users of the Júcar-Vinalopó transfer, it is very difficult for the initiative to transfer water to Murcia to proceed. This reservoir, with a capacity of 20 cubic hectometers, has been non-functional since its construction in 2010 due to deficiencies causing significant leaks through its base, problems that have remained unresolved for fifteen years.
Repairs to this reservoir depend on the Ministry for Ecological Transition. Furthermore, a significant portion of the works for the Vinalopó post-transfer, left bank, funded and executed by the Generalitat, are pending completion, facing financial difficulties in planning new sections after the DANA storm. Before the catastrophe, works worth 30 million euros were committed and awarded for the left bank post-transfer.
Currently, the Júcar-Vinalopó transfer is closed for repair work on the infrastructure's tunnels, which span 90 kilometers. These works, being carried out in the Barxeta tunnel, nearly three kilometers long, are not expected to finish until May 18. The lack of stored water in San Diego creates a deficit that the Central Board is managing with the Júcar Hydrographic Confederation to extract more water from affected aquifers and ensure supply to irrigators.
