The project, promoted by Red Eléctrica de España S.A.U., includes both prior administrative authorization and construction authorization to expand the existing 400 kV substation. The file will be open for public review for 15 working days for the submission of allegations.
“"This infrastructure will strengthen the inherent capacity of the transmission network to dynamically regulate voltage and reduce the need to activate power plants due to technical restrictions, which will contribute to cost and emission savings for the state electricity system."
The projected synchronous compensator will have a power of 250 MVA and an inertia of six seconds. These types of facilities function as large rotating machines connected to the grid capable of injecting or absorbing reactive power to stabilize electrical voltage, in addition to providing inertia to the system in the event of disturbances or generation drops, which is especially relevant in scenarios with high penetration of renewable energies.
This action is part of the Electricity Transmission Network Development Plan 2021-2026, approved by the Council of Ministers in July 2025. The project foresees a reduction in administrative and environmental deadlines, as it will be developed on already transformed land within an existing substation, without requiring an ordinary environmental assessment.
The project includes the expansion of the electrical park with AIS (air-insulated) technology and the construction of new buildings to house control systems, communications, and auxiliary services. It also contemplates the construction of access roads, drainage, fire protection systems, telecommunications networks, and protection measures against atmospheric discharges and short circuits.
Among the administrations affected by the processing are the town councils of Granja de Rocamora and Callosa de Segura, the Segura Hydrographic Confederation, the Generalitat Valenciana, and the Ministry of Transport.
