Last Sunday, April 19, the Ars Creatio association conducted an innovative geological route that covered the area between Cabo Cervera and the La Mata lagoon. The activity featured a geologist and science communicator, who offered clear and engaging explanations to the large number of participants.
The route began at 10 AM from La Mata beach and continued along Cabo Cervera. During the journey, the expert detailed the meaning of various relief elements, such as cracks, slabs, elevations, landslides, and depressions in the terrain. It was explained that the shell deposits present on this cape, and also on Cabo Roig, are the result of ancient tsunamis, different from large-scale ones like those in Japan or Bali. Oil prospecting that began in Torrevieja before the Spanish Civil War was also discussed, with contributions from an engineer who has researched the topic.
Subsequently, participants traveled by vehicle to the natural park, where explanations continued on how the coast has evolved due to glaciations and changes in sea level, shaping the current coastline and lagoons. The day concluded next to the La Mata lagoon, where the guide described the process of coastal formation that led to the lagoons, currently separated from the sea by a cordon of fossilized dunes thousands of years old.
The highly interested public appreciated the expert's interventions. In recognition of his collaboration in these cultural and natural heritage days, the association's president and the event coordinator presented him with the association's logo embedded in salt.
This activity marks the beginning of the ninth edition of the Lagunas de Torrevieja y La Mata: cultural landscape, history and heritage conference series. The next activity will be a conference on family genealogy, showcasing research on the first inhabitants of Torrevieja. This conference is scheduled for Friday, May 29, at 8:00 PM, at the Real Club Náutico de Torrevieja, with free admission. Additionally, on Sunday, April 26, Ars Creatio is organizing the awards gala for the XX Children's Short Story Contest, presented by Mírame Teatro, at the Centro Cultural Virgen del Carmen at 11:30 AM.
