The city of Peñíscola is preparing to host the 29th edition of its Classical Theatre Festival, which will take place at the Papa Luna Castle between July 6th and 18th. This event, a fixture in the summer cultural calendar of the province of Castellón, will bring together eight scenic proposals inspired by great authors of universal literature.
The program, presented by the Provincial Council of Castellón, will combine theatrical performances, contemporary adaptations, and national and international productions. The Deputy of Culture, Alejandro Clausell, highlighted the festival's trajectory as one of the main cultural offerings of the summer in the province.
The event will kick off on July 6th on the promenade with "Las cabinas literarias" (Literary Booths), based on texts by Lope de Vega, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Calderón de la Barca, Ana Caro, and William Shakespeare. On July 7th, the Plaza de Armas will host "Jasón y las Furias" (Jason and the Furies), by Nando López. On July 9th, the company Teatro Círculo de Nueva York will perform "La monja alférez" (The Ensign Nun), by Juan Ruiz de Alarcón.
The second week of the festival includes "Palabra de perro" (Dog's Word), an adaptation of "El coloquio de los perros" (The Dogs' Colloquy) by Miguel de Cervantes, co-produced by Lantia Escénica and the festival itself, on July 11th. On July 13th, the castle gardens will host "La trova de buena saña" (The Ballad of Good Malice), directed by Alexis Becker. July 14th will feature "Doña Rosita la soltera" (Doña Rosita the Spinster), by Federico García Lorca, and on July 16th, "La dama boba" (The Foolish Lady), by Lope de Vega.
The festival will conclude on July 18th with "Don Juan en los infiernos" (Don Juan in Hell), by Gonzalo Suárez, an adaptation inspired by the work of Molière.
The Classical Theatre Festival Castillo de Peñíscola takes place in one of the province's main heritage and tourist resources, the Papa Luna Castle, a unique setting that combines cultural offerings with destination promotion, thereby boosting activity during the summer season.
