The Benicarló City Council has awarded the expansion works for the municipal cemetery, which will include the construction of 296 niches and 120 columbariums, to ensure space availability for the coming years.

The intervention, awarded to the company Latra 2010 for an amount of 271,983.66 euros, has an execution period of six months. This action is crucial, as in November last year, only a hundred vacant niches remained, a figure that, at the current rate of occupation, would only cover needs for two years.
The new niches and columbariums will be located in block 5 of the cemetery's expansion area, on the plot at Camino de Ulldecona, number 5. With this expansion, the cemetery will have the capacity to cover needs until approximately 2048, maintaining the current rate of occupation.
The project foresees the construction of prefabricated reinforced concrete niches, arranged in four heights and in a double-faced configuration. This technical solution optimizes the available space, increasing the planned capacity from 272 to 296 niches in the projected block by reducing the thickness of the dividing walls.
In addition to expanding the burial capacity, the award includes improvements to the cemetery's internal accessibility. Currently, 60% of the routes are adapted, but the remaining 40% still requires the use of manual scaffolding for inhumation and exhumation operations. The works will allow the coffin lifting platform to operate throughout the enclosure, improving occupational safety and facilitating transit.
