The Mediterranean Corridor section between Castelló and Tarragona is progressing towards its completion, scheduled for 2027, with the tender for a new track gauge change contract.

The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, through Adif Alta Velocidad, has tendered for eight million euros a contract associated with the gauge change of the Castelló-Vinaròs-La Boella section. This action is essential for configuring the corridor between the north of the Valencian Community and the south of the province of Tarragona.
The action includes technical assistance and supply of small materials for the gauge change of the track apparatus, considering the complexity and specificity of these operations to implement the change from Iberian to international gauge, according to ministry sources.
Adif AV is currently carrying out the preparatory work before the physical execution of the gauge change in the Castelló de la Plana-Vinaròs-Cambiador de la Boella section. These operations focus mainly on adapting the stations along the route, both in the province of Castelló and in Tarragona, through work on tracks, catenary, safety installations, communications and signaling, electronic interlockings, and platforms.
This aims to optimize execution times and work performance to subsequently carry out the physical gauge change in a single phase. In total, approximately 450 km of tracks are being worked on, including the double track section, sidings, and the branch line to Tortosa.
The execution period for this project is 10 months and includes the supply of the necessary rails for the track change. It is worth remembering that in May, Adif tendered another contract related to this same route, with a budget of 1.6 million euros.
The ministry plans to activate the corridor between Alicante and France in 2027. In that year, a regional high-speed train between Alicante and Castelló will be launched, high-speed rail will be extended to Barcelona, and freight transport will be operational.
This action contributes to achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and may be co-financed by the European Union's 'Connecting Europe Facility' (CEF).
