The Municipal Group Compromís in the Castelló City Council will present a motion at the May plenary session to demand the recovery of public funds paid for the Magdalena song 'Castelló està llesta', after it was confirmed that the piece violated copyright regulations. The party claims the return of over 15,700 euros plus VAT paid by the council, nearly 19,000 euros in total, for a work that, according to their complaints, included plagiarized fragments and could not be legally used.
The spokesperson for Compromís, Ignasi Garcia, has criticized the municipal government's decision to formalize the payment despite the detected irregularities. As he stated, the local executive had sufficient grounds not to pay the amount and believes that 'private interests' were prioritized over the general interests of the citizens.
The motion proposes that the City Council activate the necessary mechanisms to recover the entirety of the public funds allocated to the promotional song for the Magdalena festivities.
Compromís has also questioned the local government's lack of transparency in this matter. The coalition states they requested information on the reports or criteria justifying the payment and maintains that the response received indicated it was a political decision, not a legal obligation.
Ignasi Garcia also recalled that the controversy affects the original work 'Magdalena Festa Plena', by composer Pedro Guzmán, and accused the municipal government of having promoted the campaign without previously verifying the song's legal status.
The party considers that the debate goes beyond a 'bad decision' and directly affects the management of municipal public funds.
