The head of Environment expressed concern today regarding the current situation of this space, described as an enclave of enormous ecological, landscape, and heritage value. According to the official, it is necessary to have sufficient resources to guarantee the conservation of this natural environment.
The mayor's office requested an urgent meeting last May with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food to address this issue and demand concrete measures before the start of the summer season. However, the council has reported that, to date, they have not received a response from the central executive.
“"It is unacceptable for the Ministry to abandon the surveillance of a site that is the jewel in the crown for us. We are still waiting for the meeting, but we do not have it yet."
Although no new cases of illegal fishing have been detected in recent weeks, the City Council warns that the lack of on-site surveillance could facilitate illegal activities that put the reserve's biodiversity at risk. The council has reiterated its commitment to continue defending the protection of the Columbretes Islands.
