The municipal plenary session unanimously agreed on this distinction for Rincón Murillo, who died after returning to the building to alert residents still inside their homes, having already ensured his own family was safe.
Gerson Andrés Rincón Murillo's actions have been recognized as an act of «bravery, solidarity, and generosity» that has left «a profound mark on the entire Xàbia society». His intervention was decisive in saving lives, including those of an entire family who were rescued from the fire-affected building.
The fire, which occurred on February 12th, resulted in the deaths of Rincón Murillo and a 71-year-old woman who resided in the apartment where the incident originated.
The Xàbia City Council has emphasized that, with this highest honorary distinction, it wishes to pay tribute to «an act of dedication and humanity that will forever remain in the collective memory of the municipality». It also highlighted that Gerson's actions represent «the noblest values of solidarity, bravery, and commitment to others».
The mayor of Xàbia, Rosa Cardona, stated that «Xàbia honors the memory of a person who acted with extraordinary courage and immense generosity. Gerson Andrés Rincón Murillo gave his utmost to save others, and his memory will forever remain in the heart of our municipality».
