Moraig Cove was the setting for a challenging rescue exercise that confirmed the effectiveness of emergency protocols. The drill simulated two people trapped in the Falla del Moraig, a crevice in the cliff requiring a 60-meter vertical descent.
The operation involved the municipal lifeguard service of Benitatxell, the Special Rescue Group (GER) of the Alicante Firefighters Consortium, the Local Police of Benitatxell and Xàbia, and Civil Protection of Benitatxell. These exercises are crucial for certifying the high safety standards required for the Blue Flag certification, which Moraig Cove holds.
The rescue was carried out in two complex phases. One 'victim' was retrieved by sea and later evacuated by helicopter. The other 'victim' was rescued directly by helicopter from the vertical face of the fault. Local Police and Civil Protection secured the perimeters to ensure safety during the helicopter maneuvers.
The exercise, celebrating the 15th anniversary of SVS, the concessionaire of the surveillance and lifeguard service in Benitatxell, demonstrated the great response capacity and planning for rescues along this rugged coast. The setup is prepared to handle any eventuality.
The Councilor for Citizen Security, María José Ivars, emphasized the importance of coordination in abrupt scenarios, stating, "Coordination in scenarios as abrupt and complicated as those in our municipality is vital. Seeing these professionals work against the clock and in such difficult situations shows that we are in the best possible hands."
The municipal beach surveillance and rescue service, provided by SVS, officially began this Monday, June 15th, and will operate daily until September 15th to ensure the safety of bathers during the summer.
