A large teachers' picket line alternately blocked the entrance and exit of Dénia via Avenida de València, the city's main access road. Several cars had to stop, causing traffic jams. Some drivers honked their horns, and one driver encouraged the protesters.
This was the first major act of the teachers' strike, which started this Monday. The mobilization aims not only to empty classrooms sustainably by the end of this academic year but also to disrupt daily life in municipalities to make the teachers' demands clear to the Ministry of Education.
The first day of the strike was frantic across Marina Alta, with informational picket lines in most towns, at both high schools and primary schools. At high schools, pickets began at 7:45 AM. In towns with only one center, such as Ondara, Teulada, Benissa, Gata, Xaló, Orba, Pego, and Pedreguer, the largest concentrations occurred. In Xaló, a large cardboard coffin symbolized the demise of public education.
In Calp and Xàbia, pickets were distributed between the two high schools. Logistical difficulties were greater in Dénia, which has three such secondary centers: IES Sorts de la Mar held its own picket, while teachers from IES Chabàs went to Maria Ibars, and those from primary schools went to Chabàs. Later, from 8:45 AM, pickets were held at public primary schools across the region.
In Dénia, the main focal point was Llebeig primary school, at which point Avenida de València was cut off. Afterward, teachers went to Jaume I Square, where they also demonstrated, once again interrupting traffic in that vital location for the circulation of people during the early morning hours of a workday. Subsequently, the teachers planned to march to a demonstration in Alicante.
Unions have warned that the picket lines are solely to show that not supporting the strike is an act of disloyalty to the majority of the educational collective. However, they have not at any time prevented entry to workplaces for those professionals who have decided to continue their work activity.
