The educational community in Xàtiva and Canals has staged a massive lock-in at their high schools, as a prelude to an indefinite strike starting next Monday, May 11, to demand improvements in public education.

Dozens of teachers, students, and families gathered this Thursday at IES Josep de Ribera in Xàtiva, for the planned lock-in ahead of the indefinite education strike. The Xàtiva institute brought together a large part of the educational communities from centers in the capital of La Costera and other towns, in a protest act that also took place at IES Sivera Font in Canals.

"This event is part of a long process of mobilization and demands from the educational community in the face of a situation we consider unsustainable, and for which we demand that the regional administration sit down to negotiate now."

Among the main demands, the organized assemblies call for lower student-teacher ratios, reduced bureaucracy, more teachers and support professionals, better infrastructure, and the recovery of teachers' purchasing power. The Valencian language was also defended, noting that it is being attacked by the Generalitat Valenciana.
The informational assembly at IES Josep de Ribera included participation from members of the institute's own educational community, as well as from Xàtiva centers such as CIPFP La Costera, IES Doctor Simarro, and public primary schools like Attilio Bruschetti, Taquígraf Martí, and Jacinto Castanyeda. Teachers from other centers in the region and from outside the Valencian Community were also present.
The day began with the defense of the Valencian language in classrooms and the performance of the Muixeranga by two teachers, members of the Colla de Dolçainers i Tabaleters La Socarrà from Xàtiva, alongside a large senyera flag. Speeches were interspersed with musical performances, including an adapted version of the song Malaguenya de Barxeta.
Other mobilizations include a symbolic action by CIPFP La Costera at the Xàtiva Student Fair on May 8, where teachers will protest with reflective vests and signs bearing the slogan “docent treballant en precari” (teacher working precariously). The PSPV de la Costera-Canal has also shown its support for the strike, demanding that the Generalitat Valenciana negotiate with trade unions.
