The Universitat de València and the Mancomunidad de l'Horta Sud have joined forces to offer free training sessions on flood risk, aimed at the citizens of the region.

After the Dana of October 29, 2024, the need for citizens to better understand the territory where they live has become evident. For this reason, these pilot sessions have been organized, which are completely free and open, although prior registration is required due to limited capacity.
This initiative is part of a European project promoted by the Riumed research group, linked to the Faculty of Geography of the Universitat de València. In a first phase, five training sessions will be developed for about 250 people residing in the 13 municipalities of the region with the highest risk of flooding, according to UV studies.
The first training session, which will serve as a presentation, will take place on May 13 at the Museo de l'Horta Sud (Virgen del Olivar street, 30 in Torrent) at 6:00 p.m. To participate, registration must be completed via the QR code or the provided link. It is aimed at citizens who live or work in Torrent.

"This initiative is absolutely necessary in l'Horta Sud, as it is based on better understanding our territory to protect ourselves. The Dana has taught us that citizens must be minimally trained."

the president of the Mancomunidad
Each training will have specific content, so each interested person must attend the one corresponding to their municipality of residence or reference. The remaining sessions will be organized in Aldaia (May 15), for residents of Aldaia, Alaquàs, and Xirivella; in Paiporta (May 18), for Paiporta and Picanya; in Massanassa (May 20), for Massanassa, Catarroja, and Albal; and in Benetússer (May 21), for citizens of Benetússer, Alfafar, Sedaví, and Llocnou de la Corona.

"We will not explain in the training how to eliminate the risk but how to learn to live with it. Educating about risk implies knowing the territory."

the scientist Ana Camarasa
Participant reception will be at 5:30 p.m. at each location, with an institutional presentation at 5:45 p.m. The training part will begin at 6:00 p.m. with the module “What is the river basin where you live?”, followed by “What is the flood risk in my basin?”. After a coffee break, the training will culminate with a third module: “How to access reliable information”.
