Meliana Implements AI Recycling System with Local Incentives

The Generalitat supports a pioneering project in l'Horta Nord combining technology and discount vouchers for local businesses.

The Conselleria de Innovación has backed Meliana in implementing an advanced recycling system that uses artificial intelligence and monitoring, complemented by citizen incentives.

The Conselleria d'Industria, Turisme, Innovació i Comerç has supported the implementation of a pioneering waste recycling system in Meliana. This system combines artificial intelligence and monitoring technologies with citizen incentives, such as discount vouchers redeemable at local businesses. According to Juan José Cortés, Director General of Innovation, who met with the town's mayor, Trini Montaña, the model has increased glass collection by 28% and light packaging by 17%.
Cortés highlighted that “Meliana demonstrates that innovation is not an end in itself, but a tool to transform public services and generate value for citizens.” The goal is to promote projects that turn municipalities into “innovation laboratories” where new technologies translate into “concrete solutions to improve sustainability, efficiency, and quality of life”.
With €75,000 in support, the Meliana City Council initiative is part of the Territorios Innovadores program by the Conselleria d'Innovació, aiming to foster R&D&i solutions impacting towns and cities in the Comunitat Valenciana. The Generalitat's backing has enabled the deployment of 35 new RecySmart devices, identifying users and waste types, along with 68 ultrasonic sensors to monitor container levels and optimize collection routes.
The system offers complete recycling traceability and allows for incident management via an interactive digital platform. Furthermore, the plan includes an incentive program that has rewarded residents with over a thousand discount vouchers for local businesses. The results show a substantial increase in collected waste, with over 500,000 correctly separated containers, and an improvement in the quality of recovered materials.
Mayor Trini Montaña emphasized citizen involvement as key to the success, consolidating a more efficient and sustainable recycling model. Meliana is the first municipality in the Comunitat Valenciana to implement this solution across its entire territory, aligning with current European regulations and paving the way for future pay-as-you-throw systems.
