The Spain Future call-up, the Spanish Basketball Federation's (FEB) project to enhance the monitoring and development of promising young talents in Spanish women's basketball, includes players Claudia Contell and Elba Garfella, both linked to Manises. The training camp will be held from May 31st to June 8th, with an initial phase in Madrid followed by a trip to Naples (Italy) to compete in a preparatory tournament against the Italian national team.
The presence of Contell and Garfella highlights the role of l'Horta in this list, which comprises 13 players from various competitions such as the Liga Femenina Endesa, Liga Femenina Challenge, NCAA, and other international tournaments. The FEB thus maintains its commitment to connecting youth categories with the senior national team environment.
Claudia Contell, who trained at L’Alqueria del Basket and has previous experience with Valencia Basket, arrives at this event after a season competing with CB Gran Canaria and CAB Estepona. The player from Manises has confirmed her move to US college basketball by signing with Texas Christian University (TCU), where her women's team competes in the NCAA as the TCU Horned Frogs. Contell already boasts a notable track record in Spain's youth categories, having been named MVP of the 2022 U20 European Championship, which Spain won, and has gained experience in European competitions.
Also included in the call-up is Elba Garfella, another player from Manises currently playing for Durán Maquinaria Ensino. Garfella has been a regular in Spanish youth national teams and was a champion of the U20 European Championship with Spain in 2022, continuing her progression in the elite of national women's basketball.
The Spain Future roster also features Noa Morro, a player with a sporting connection to the region through La Cordà de Paterna / NB Paterna, further extending the call-up's link to l'Horta's basketball scene and reinforcing the region's prominence in tracking young Spanish female talent.
The coaching staff will be led by Anna Montañana, with Azu Muguruza and Marta Sorlí as assistant coaches. National team coach Miguel Méndez will also provide oversight during part of the training. The rest of the technical staff includes Javier Bayarri (physical trainer), Manuel Astray (doctor), María del Mar Rodríguez (physiotherapist), and Sheila Alaña (delegate).
The complete Spain Future roster consists of Claudia Contell, Paula Suárez, Deva Bermejo, Marina Aviñoa, Judith Valero, Marta Morales, Gisela Sánchez, Carla Brito, Elba Garfella, Marina Mata, Noa Morro, Ariadna Termis, and Tayra Eke. With this initiative, the FEB continues to foster young female talent at a crucial time for Spanish basketball, marked by the growth of the NCAA and the need to consolidate generational change.
