The event combined competition for the youngest participants with expert debate on the evolution and future of the discipline, featuring Grandmaster Miguel Illescas. The gathering served to highlight the Valencian roots of modern chess.
The competition commenced with the final round of the Municipal Chess Schools, where participants in the under-8 and under-12 categories competed in various tournaments in a fun and festive atmosphere. All minors received trophies in recognition of their participation.
The central event focused on the historical and technical analysis of the mind sport. The managing director of the Municipal Sports Foundation of Valencia, María Ángeles Vidal, introduced the subsequent colloquium, emphasizing the key milestones of the 550th anniversary of modern chess's birth. She described the opportunity to commemorate this event with Miguel Illescas, an eight-time Spanish champion and director of Peón de Rey magazine, as a privilege.
The debate between Miguel Illescas and José A. Garzón, a specialist in chess history, began with the screening of the documentary «Valencia, Cuna del Ajedrez Moderno». A tribute was paid to the memory of Thomas Thomsen, a recently deceased researcher and collector. The speakers analyzed how the current rules were first established in Valencia in 1475 through the poem «Scachs d´amor» and were disseminated with Francesch Vicent's 1495 incunable.
Technical details of that Valencian revolution were explained, such as the shift to the modern queen's movement and the strategic balance introduced by the bishop. Garzón detailed discarded but historically valuable proposals, like positions with two queens of the same color or initial exchange systems.
Illescas analyzed the global rise of chess in the digital age and how technological preparation forces elite players to memorize lines of play beyond move 30. Faced with the potential exhaustion of classic combinations in high-level competition, experts presented current alternatives such as Total Chess or variants created by the panelists themselves: Ajedrez del Virrey, promoted by Garzón, and DragonChess, whose rules Illescas detailed.
The event was organized by the Valencia Foundation Cuna del Ajedrez Moderno, with support from the Generalitat Valenciana, the Chess Federation of the Valencian Community, and the València City Council.
