The news was confirmed by his representative, Erica Bolton, who stated that the artist died on June 11, 2026, a month before his 89th birthday. Hockney, born in Bradford in 1937, was celebrated for a six-decade career as a painter, stage designer, printmaker, and photographer.
The artist continuously reinvented his work, embracing new technologies such as graphic design created with iPads. He is considered one of the foremost proponents of pop art in the UK and globally. After studying at the Royal College of Art in London, he moved to the United States in the 1960s, where he made everyday scenes and homosexuality central themes in his art.
In Valencia, David Hockney's name features prominently at the Hortensia Herrero Art Centre with the project 'Las cuatro estaciones' (The Four Seasons), an audiovisual creation depicting the Yorkshire forest through different times of the year. The center also showcases iPad drawings and pieces exploring the landscape differences between winter and summer in Normandy.
Furthermore, the Centre del Carme hosts Hockney's works as part of the Avelino Marín Collection. This exhibition, open until September 27, includes an etching titled 'Cold water about to hit the prince'.
