A demonstration led by representatives of the main DANA victims' associations, with the slogan 'Mazón to prison', marched through the center of Valencia this Saturday. The aim is to demand the deputy seat of the former president of the Generalitat and to make it clear that they will continue to take to the streets until they achieve "truth, justice, and reparation", as well as to ensure that "immunity is not applied" to him, because "we still do not know the truth".
Some attendees showed t-shirts with slogans like 'No to Mazón's immunity' or '20.11, neither forgetting nor forgiving' and banners with the slogans 'Neither left nor right. We want a government that protects us', 'Mazón to prison. Valencia does not want you', 'Less lies and more justice, murderers' or 'When you lie, you not only hide the truth, but also the lie'.
A banner was also unfurled with the slogan 'Now we all raise our voice for those who can no longer' and chants such as 'They are not deaths, they are murders' and 'No to immunity, yes to Picassent'. A column formed by families and teachers joined Saturday's march, as part of the indefinite strike by non-university public education staff, which has now completed its third week.
The Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community (TSJCV) unanimously rejected investigating Mazón for his actions during the DANA on October 29, 2024, finding no crime, as he did not have a specific "duty and obligation" to guarantee citizens' safety --according to the law-- nor has it been proven that he participated in Es Alert. However, the court describes his conduct as socially and politically "reprehensible".
The president of the Association of Victims of the DANA October 29, 2024, Mariló Gradolí, stated that 19 months after the flood they are "taking to the streets" because they "still do not have truth, justice, and reparation". "19 months later, we are making the same route as in the first demonstration, when 130,000 Valencians supported us, and that support is still alive, more alive than ever. We continue forward because we have the same objective as that day: truth, justice, reparation, and future security".
Regarding the DANA Investigation Commission of Les Corts, Gradolí acknowledged that the associations knew it was a "charade". "We demand to participate -- she said -- because the voice of the victims had to be in that investigation commission. However, the real investigation commission is the Court of Instruction number 3 of Catarroja, where proven facts are showing that there was sufficient information to alert the population and the media to warn the population, and it was not done".
For her part, representing the Association of Affected Parties DANA-L'Horta Sud, its vice-president, Elizabeth González, highlighted that the reason they are taking to the streets is "because we want Mazón to hand over the seat" as a regional deputy. In her opinion, it is "a direct mockery of the citizens" that Mazón "continues in the position he is in".
Secondly, she said: "We insist that we are asking for emergency works and not reconstruction. Reconstruction works will take 20 or 30 years. Therefore, we demand that this be treated now as an emergency work".
