Real Madrid will once again experience presidential elections with two candidates, something that has not happened in two decades. The electoral board has officially confirmed Enrique Riquelme's candidacy, which joins the one already presented by Florentino Pérez. The electoral board's decision comes after verifying that Riquelme's candidacy meets all legal and statutory requirements.
With the validation of Riquelme's candidacy, the electoral board now has one day to set the election date. Sunday, June 7, has been suggested, although the Pope's visit to Madrid could bring the date forward to next Sunday, May 31.
One of the consequences of these elections is the postponement of the announcement of José Mourinho's signing. Although the current board remains in office, the final decision and official announcement have been postponed until after the elections. Both candidates will now have a period to present their platforms to the more than 90,000 eligible members.
Florentino Pérez, 79, faces an electoral rival for the first time in twenty years. Enrique Riquelme, 37 and son of a former director, is running for the first time. Pérez has been proclaimed president unopposed since his return in 2009, having previously defeated Lorenzo Sanz and Arturo Baldasano in 2004. The last elections with a vote were in 2006, when Ramón Calderón was elected.
