The Valencian Government has dismissed Álvaro López-Jamar as Director General of the Valencian Institute of Culture (IVC), leaving the key cultural body of the Ministry of Education and Culture without leadership at a crucial time.

The Valencian Institute of Culture (IVC) is without a Director General after the Valencian Government decided to dismiss Álvaro López-Jamar. According to official sources, his departure is due to "personal reasons," although the news was first reported by Las Provincias and confirmed by several media outlets.
López-Jamar's vacant position will be filled through a new public tender, a method previously used. However, there is no defined timeline for initiating this process, which could prolong the interim situation for months, coinciding with budget presentations and the final year of the legislative term.
The IVC's Board of Directors, composed of senior officials from the Ministry, was the body that addressed this dismissal. Paradoxically, the position of Director General of Culture, now vacant, was recently held by Ignacio Prieto, who until a month ago was Deputy Director of Management at the IVC, a direct subordinate of López-Jamar.
López-Jamar took office in April 2024, following the dismissal of Abel Guarinos. During his tenure, he has seen three ministers oversee the Culture portfolio: Vicente Barrera, José Antonio Rovira, and the current minister, Carmen Ortí. His appointment occurred amidst significant changes in the management of cultural spaces in the Valencian Community after the last regional elections.
In recent weeks, the cultural sector had expressed its discontent with the Ministry of Culture, and the IVC, as the primary point of contact, had faced numerous protests. One of the most notable came from various performing arts associations at the Alcoi Theatre Showcase, where the institution was renamed "Institut Violent amb la Cultura" (Violent Institute with Culture). López-Jamar defended the entity's management, acknowledging both "virtues" and "flaws."
The performing arts sector has been one of the most critical, pointing to issues such as the management of the Cultural Circuit and the disappearance of the Valencian Performing Arts Awards. The audiovisual sector has also joined the criticism, denouncing "erratic policies" by the Generalitat, particularly following the controversy surrounding the filming at Ciudad de la Luz.
