The Virgen del Socorro neighborhood in Alicante woke up this Saturday with overflowing trash bins and garbage on the ground, including broken glass, after a night of fireworks. This situation, which persisted at midday, creates a poor image of the area.
Many people choose this neighborhood due to its proximity to Postiguet Beach to enjoy the pyrotechnic displays. It is common for attendees to bring food and drinks, but some do not collect their waste. When they deposit it in the nearest bin, these end up overloaded and overflowing, causing garbage to accumulate around them.
The change in the location of the fireworks, which limits the occupation of Postiguet Beach's sand, has caused spectators to disperse to other parts of the city. The fireworks display will continue in Alicante until next Monday, and a large public turnout is expected this Saturday as it coincides with the weekend.
In the city center, around Plaza Calvo Sotelo, a tangle of lighting cables installed during the Hogueras festivities still remains.
