The Alicante City Council and Ecovidrio have launched a new edition of the "La Banyà Verd" campaign during the Hogueras festivities. The aim is to encourage selective collection of glass containers among the festival committees, barracas, and racós. As an incentive, a giant paella will be raffled among those groups that collect over 400 kilos of glass.
This initiative seeks to reinforce recycling habits and demonstrate that tradition and sustainability can go hand in hand. The Councilor for Street Cleaning and Waste Management, Rafael Alemañ, has encouraged participants to use the containers provided by Ecovidrio, highlighting the importance of environmental commitment for a better future.
To facilitate participation, the campaign features an interactive map on the official "La Banyà Verd" website, where each committee can locate its assigned container. Additionally, citizens can contribute by recycling their containers at the designated points, thus helping to increase glass recovery figures.
This year, the campaign also promotes Alicante's festival culture, offering downloadable definitions of terms like "foguerer" and "barraquer" created by Ecovidrio and the Federació de Fogueres de Sant Joan, with the aim of having these figures incorporated into the dictionary of the Real Academia Española.
Glass recycling is crucial for environmental protection. In Alicante, approximately seven tons of glass are recycled annually, about 18 kilos per inhabitant. Glass is a 100% recyclable material that can be reused indefinitely, saving energy, reducing CO2 emissions, and conserving natural resources.
