Elche CF player David Affengruber has secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup knockout stages with the Austrian national team. The central defender, who has yet to play a minute in the tournament, experienced a dramatic match finale against Algeria from the bench.
Austria secured their ticket to the round of 16 by drawing 3-3 against Algeria in their third group stage match. From the bench at Kansas stadium, Affengruber witnessed Algeria take a 3-2 lead in the 93rd minute, only to erupt in joy with Kalajdzic's goal in the 96th minute, which sealed their progression.
The Central Europeans finished second in Group J, behind Argentina, thanks to an opening victory against Jordan and the draw against the African side. Affengruber has not had the opportunity to play in any of these matches.
“"This duel will be the moment to see if Rangnick trusts Affengruber or not. So far, he hasn't."
Austria will now face Spain next Thursday in Inglewood (Los Angeles, California). This match will be particularly special for Affengruber, as he will compete against the country where he plays and resides since joining Elche.
Austrian coach Ralf Rangnick has relied on Lienhart and Alaba as starting central defenders, with Danso as a substitute, currently overlooking the defender from the Elche team.
